Learning from the brain: Computer scientists develop new generation of neuro-computer
Intelligent machines that not only think for themselves but also actively learn are the vision of researchers who have been co-ordinating the European Union research project "Brain-i-Nets" (Novel Brain Inspired Learning Paradigms for Large-Scale Neuronal Networks). The scientists want to design a new generation of neuro-computers based on the principles of calculation and learning mechanisms found in the brain, and at the same time gain new knowledge about the brain's learning mechanisms.... New algorithm improves video game quality
Brain-controlled cursor doubles as a neural workout
Electrodes on the surface of the brain show that using imagined movements to control a computer cursor can generate larger-than-life brain signals after less than 10 minutes of training.... [read the full article]
Computer simulations can be as effective as direct observation at teaching students
Students can learn some science concepts just as well from computers simulations as they do from direct observation, new research suggests. A study found that people who used computer simulations to learn about moon phases understood the concepts just as well -- and in some cases better -- than did those who learned from collecting data from viewing the moon.... Walking robot switches gaits autonomously and flexibly
Even simple insects can generate quite different movement patterns with their six legs. The animal uses different gaits depending on whether it crawls uphill or downhill, slowly or quick. Scientists have now developed a walking robot, which can flexibly and autonomously switch between different gaits. The success of their solution lies in its simplicity: a small and simple network with just a few connections can create very diverse movement patterns. To this end, the robot uses a mechanism for "chaos control."... [read the full article]
OC Robotics launches "Explorer" range of snake-arm robots
OC Robotics has today introductioned a new range of snake-arm robots.
The Explorer range of snake-arms robots is developed to enable clients to conduct operations within confined spaces. The Explorer range occupies the mid-range for diameter, reach, payload and curvature with arm diameters from 40mm to 150mm and is based on snake-arms developed for the aerospace sector.
Rob Buckingham, OC Robotics co-founder and Managing Director says: "We expect the Explorer range of snake-arm robots to meet many general purpose applications for inspection and maintenance within confined and hazardous spaces."
